Mini projector brightness and resolution, explained without the marketing

Updated by Tomas Lindgren. No product picks here, just the numbers that decide them.

The short answer

Compare only ANSI or ISO 21118 lumens, and only native resolution. A dark room needs about 16 foot-lamberts on the screen, roughly 300 ANSI lumens for 80 inches and 475 for 100 inches. 'LED lumens', '4K supported' and maximum screen size tell you almost nothing.

What people worry about here

Is the brightness on the listing real?

Only if it names a standard. ANSI or ISO 21118 lumens can be compared; a bare 'lumens' or 'LED lumens' figure can't, and budget listings often print both. Believe the smaller number, then look for a certificate or a reviewer's measurement.

650 ANSI and 20,000 lumensone $60 listing in our Oct 25, 2026 data prints both in the same title

Can I watch with a lamp on, or outside before it's fully dark?

Only with a bright projector or a small picture. A dark room needs about 16 foot-lamberts on the screen, which is roughly 475 ANSI lumens for a 100-inch picture. A lamp nearly doubles what you need. Outdoors, wait until 30 minutes after sunset.

ANSI lumens, ISO lumens and the rest

ANSI lumens are measured on a full white picture at nine points and averaged. ISO 21118 lumens follow the same idea and are now the industry standard; treat the two as roughly equal. When an independent lab measures, results often land below the rating, which is why our score trusts lab-measured figures most.

Anything else, "LED lumens", "light source lumens" or a bare number, has no shared method. The Smart Home Hookup, which has tested cheap projectors for five years, still finds most budget listings misleading.

Native resolution versus 4K supported

The panel inside a projector has a fixed number of pixels, its native resolution. "4K supported" or "4K decoding" means the projector accepts a 4K signal and scales it down to that panel. Look for the word native next to 1920×1080.

Real 4K in small projectors comes from pixel shifting: a 1080p-class chip shifts each frame quickly to place four times the pixels on screen. RTINGS lists the Elfin Flip 4K this way. It's genuinely sharper than 1080p, and genuinely different from a budget box that merely accepts 4K.

Is an LCD projector worse than DLP?

Not automatically. Budget LCD projectors such as the D1R Air and BOOM Air deliver native 1080p cheaply. Single-chip DLP projectors, like the Elfin Flip and Mars 3, can show brief rainbow flashes to some viewers; LCD can't, but cheap LCD engines can collect dust if they aren't sealed.

Work it out for your room

How big will the picture be?

How bright does it need to be?

16 fL is the SMPTE reference level for cinema screens. Rated lumens are measured in the brightest mode, hence the headroom.

    Questions people ask

What is the difference between ANSI lumens and LED lumens?

ANSI and ISO 21118 lumens are measured the same way across brands, so you can compare them. 'LED lumens' and bare 'lumens' have no shared method and usually come out several times higher. A projector sold as 9,000 lumens may put out fewer than 200 ANSI.

How many lumens do I need for a mini projector?

In a dark room, about 300 ANSI lumens fills an 80-inch picture and about 475 fills 100 inches. With a lamp on, roughly double it. Use the brightness calculator on this page with your own picture size.

Does 'supports 4K' mean the projector is 4K?

No. It accepts a 4K signal and shrinks it to fit a lower-resolution panel, usually 1080p or 720p. Real 4K in a small projector, like the Elfin Flip 4K, comes from pixel shifting on a laser model around $1,000.

Which mini projector native 1080p models are worth it?

In our ten: the MoGo 4 Laser, Elfin Flip Laser, D1R Air, BOOM Air, BenQ GV50, Nebula Mars 3, Fudoni GC888A and HAPPRUN H1. When shopping for any mini projector native 1080p listing, look for the word native next to 1920×1080, not just 'Full HD supported'.

Is an LCD projector worse than DLP?

Not automatically. Budget LCD projectors like the D1R Air and BOOM Air give sharp 1080p for little money; single-chip DLP models avoid the slight softness of cheap LCD panels and can show rainbow flashes for some viewers. An LCD projector with a sealed engine also keeps dust out of the light path.

Why does my projector look dimmer than its rating?

Ratings are measured in the brightest mode, which usually looks green or harsh. Movie and eco modes run noticeably dimmer, and battery mode often cuts brightness further. That's why our calculator adds 20% headroom.

Does keystone correction make the picture worse?

Digital keystone squeezes the image into a rectangle by dropping pixels, so heavy correction softens text. Raise the projector to the middle of the screen with a stand and keep correction small.

Pico projector vs pocket projector: is there a difference?

Not really. Both mean a projector small enough for a pocket or palm, usually under 1 pound and under 150 lumens. The Aurzen ZIP and Kodak Luma 150 are examples. Pico projector vs pocket projector is marketing, not a spec.

Is a video projector different from a mini projector?

'Video projector' is the general term for any projector made for movies and TV rather than slides. A mini projector is a small, often battery-powered video projector. Everything on this page applies to both.
