Best mini projector for the bedroom, movie nights and home use

Updated by Tomas Lindgren. Sorted three ways: the best mini projector for bedroom ceilings, the best mini projector for movies on a wall, and the best mini projector for home use in a small living room.

The short answer

For watching on the ceiling from bed, the BenQ GV50: it tilts 135 degrees, rotates the picture and has official Netflix. For the best movie picture in a small room, the Elfin Flip 4K. On a budget, the D1R Air fills an 80-inch wall in a dark bedroom for under $200.

What people worry about here

How big will the picture be from where I sit?

Picture width equals distance divided by the throw ratio. Most minis sit around 1.2:1, so 8 feet away gives a picture about 80 inches wide, or a 92-inch diagonal. Drag the slider at the top of the page or use the calculator.

1.2:1throw ratio of the Nebula Mars 3 (Soundcore) and BenQ GV50 (spec sheet)

Can I watch with a lamp on, or outside before it's fully dark?

Only with a bright projector or a small picture. A dark room needs about 16 foot-lamberts on the screen, which is roughly 475 ANSI lumens for a 100-inch picture. A lamp nearly doubles what you need. Outdoors, wait until 30 minutes after sunset.

about 475 ANSIlumens for a 100-inch picture at the 16 fL cinema target (our calculator, SMPTE reference level)

Will the fan be loud during quiet scenes?

It varies a lot and listings don't help: claims like 'under 30 dB' aren't measured the same way reviewers measure. The Smart Home Hookup measured one budget projector at 48.4 dB, louder than most of its group. Sit away from the exhaust vent, or move the sound closer to you.

Will Netflix and YouTube work without a stick?

On projectors with licensed Google TV, Roku or Samsung Tizen, yes. On plain Android boxes and mirroring-only models, often not: copy protection blocks mirrored Netflix, and some projectors can't install the official app at all.

A mini projector for home use: what to expect

A home projector in a bedroom lives or dies by darkness. With the curtains closed, a 300 to 500 lumen mini fills 80 to 100 inches, which is the main reason people buy a projector for home movie nights instead of a bigger TV.

A mini makes a decent projector for home cinema use at that size, but it won't match the contrast of dedicated projectors for home theater rooms, which are larger and plug in. If you want a movie projector that also goes camping, stay with the picks above; if it will never leave the room, look at full-size models.

Work it out for your setup

How big will the picture be?

How bright does it need to be?

16 fL is the SMPTE reference level for cinema screens. Rated lumens are measured in the brightest mode, hence the headroom.

Add-ons that matter here

A 100-inch screen with a stand

TOWOND 100-inch portable screen

A real screen is the cheapest brightness upgrade there is: a white matte surface reflects more evenly than a painted wall, and the stand lets you set up anywhere.

What to look for: Look for a wrinkle-resistant fabric and a 16:9 frame that matches your projector.

An adjustable projector stand

Getting the lens level with the middle of the screen avoids heavy keystone correction, which costs sharpness.

What to look for: A 1/4-inch screw that matches the projector's tripod socket and a tilt lock.

Blackout curtains

Darkening the room does more for a 300-lumen projector than any setting. Our brightness calculator shows how much.

What to look for: Full-length panels and a rod that wraps around the sides to stop light leaking in.

Questions people ask

Which mini projector for ceiling projection works best?

The BenQ GV50, which tilts 135 degrees on its base and has a ceiling sound mode. The MoGo 4 Laser and D1R Air also tilt up. Any mini projector for ceiling projection should flip the image automatically; check for auto rotation.

What's a sensible mini projector for kids room movie nights?

One with licensed apps and parental profiles, so kids don't wander into random Android stores. The BOOM Air has a Kids Mode with profiles. For a mini projector for kids room use, keep it on a shelf out of reach; lasers and LEDs are bright up close.

What size movie projector do I need for a bedroom?

In most bedrooms the wall is 7 to 9 feet from the bed, which gives an 80 to 95 inch picture on a 1.2:1 throw. A movie projector with 300 to 500 ANSI lumens fills that in a dark room.

Can a mini projector work as a projector for home cinema?

In a dark room, yes, at 80 to 100 inches. A dedicated projector for home cinema use is brighter and has better contrast; the Elfin Flip 4K is the closest small option in our data.

Are TV projectors for home use different from mini projectors?

TV projectors for home use usually mean projectors with a smart TV system built in, so they work like a TV out of the box. Several of our mini picks qualify; look for licensed Google TV, Roku or Tizen.

What is the best projector for home use if I don't need portability?

If it will live in one room, a full-size projector beats any mini on brightness. Among the projectors in our data, the Hisense C2 Pro is in that class but untested by sources we could read. For the best projector for home use in a small room, the Elfin Flip 4K is our pick.

Which projectors for home theater should I look at instead?

For a dedicated room, look at RTINGS's home theater list, which covers larger lamp and laser projectors. Projectors for home theater use need contrast more than portability, which minis can't match.

Is a film projector the same as a movie projector?

No. A film projector runs physical film reels, like 8 mm or 16 mm. A movie projector in today's shopping sense is a digital video projector for streaming and Blu-ray, which is what this site covers.

Mini projector vs TV: which is better for a small room?

A TV wins in daylight and on contrast; a projector wins on size per dollar and disappears when you're done. If the room can get dark and you want 80 inches or more, a projector makes sense. Some people search 'projector tv' for this exact setup, a projector used as the main screen; for that, pick something with licensed apps so it behaves like a TV.
